Having the Pontus II in my system for about a month, I suppose I could share with you my first impressions.
But before making any comment, I’d like to underline that all my comments are NOT a critic of the Pontus dac.
It’s just a subjective point of view, besides the sound quality depends on various parameters. My HI-FI rests in my living room, not in a professional studio. So let’s start from the fact that I’m very pleased from having the Pontus dac in my system.
I’m very satisfied with the overall performance, so I’ll try to be brief. After the retirement of my previous source (iPod + Wadia tansport), I decided to buy a good cdplayer. On a second thought (something more flexible and upgradable) the combination of a decent cd transport and a good dac came in mind. The reviews of the Pontus dac convinced me that it was the right choice for my taste of listening to music. And yes it was!
I can easily agree with many others that clarity and bass definition are more than obvious sound improvements/characteristics. The soundstage is very good, I’d like it a bit more deeper. I already had an accurate and wide soundstage so I was expecting a 3 dimensional expansion.
The timbre of the voices, the colour, is what a demanding listener would expect from this price level. Now about the instruments… hm I was very much expecting to feel the air, the distance between them. I would like a more audible impact. That’s the only thing that disappointed me a little.
Maybe I was expecting too much, maybe something in my setup is not as revealing as I’d like, maybe I can’t hear it… I don’t know.
Please let me repeat, this is my subjective impression, not a critic.
Finishing my letter, it would be a major omission not to mention the EXCELLENT behavior and customer policy of Vinshine Audio. I appreciate your professionalism very much and be sure if I had the money you’d be my first choice again!
